About
Maryam Ficociello (PhD. London School of Economics) is a research associate in Genomics and Bioinformatics at the School of Communication, Simon Fraser University. She is also a sessional lecturer in Management Information Systems at Simon Fraser University's Beedie School of Business.
Dr. Ficociello's teaching and research focus on issues pertaining to the social aspects of technological innovation as well as the organizational implications of implementing Information Systems. She has been involved in research evaluating the implementation of electronic health records in secondary care in England, and has more recently explored the implications of having mixed modes of electronic and paper-based handoffs of patient care in a Canadian teaching hospital.
Dr. Ficociello is currently engaged in an exciting project in Genomics and Bioinformatics, which takes an innovative approach to understanding technology in the context of health sciences. The project draws on Science and Technology Studies (STS) to explore the socio-technical issues emerging from efforts to integrate data across British Columbia’s biomedical genomics research community. The study will help us understand how data from electronic health records could potentially be integrated with genomic data, bringing us closer to reaping benefits from truly Personalized Medicine.
Trained as a qualitative researcher, Dr. Ficociello deploys qualitative methods to understand the implications of technology for organizations. Her work has been presented at the International Federation for Information Processing, American Medical Informatics Association, and European Conference on Information Systems.
