About
I research and write about sexuality and gender in modern Canada. Previously I was preoccupied with the history of sexual deviation as a cultural, legal, medical, and criminal construction. I explored that theme by examining the emergence of a legal regime that promoted treatment for sexual deviation which led me to some interesting findings on the origins of sex offender and homosexual treatment in clinics and prisons in the post-WWII era.
My current research project concerns Toronto's postwar lesbian bar culture as an affective community with intimate links to Chinatown. I am also working on a related study of postwar lesbian marriage practices, and am currently in the process of building the Archive of Lesbian Oral Testimony, a digital archive of interviews and other oral records of lesbian experience from around the world.
Finally, I have an ongoing research interest in the debutante practice of 'coming out' during the interwar era.
